Human Material for Research: Eye Banking, Biobanking and Ethical Access

Abstract

In this chapter, we will explore access to human tissue for research and the role of the eye bank and biobank custodians responsible for this provision. We will examine the donation and allocation processes, discuss existing systems, donation and allocation pathways, the barriers to research allocation, and the ethical and the legal measures required to ensure that respect for the donation and the individual is maintained when providing tissue for research. Finally, we provide recommendations for researchers seeking human tissue for research.
