Abstract
One in two cancer survivors experiences high levels of psychosocial distress as a result of a variety of problems that can affect every aspect of life. Common issues include fear that cancer will come back or progress, body image disturbances that impact self-esteem and sexuality, existential concerns such as purpose in one’s life, as well as cognitive, financial, and occupational problems. While these issues are common and can be seen as part of the adjustment process to managing the stressful events presented by cancer and its treatment, these issues do not necessarily abate over time and can lead to long-term psychological problems such as anxiety and depression if left unaddressed.
