Initial development of a patient-centred symptom score for bladder dysfunction at night in older hospitalised patients

Abstract

Despite the body of evidence that nocturnal bladder dysfunction in community-dwelling individuals is treatable, attention to recognition, evaluation and management of bladder symptoms at night on the hospital ward is minimal. The aim of this study was to develop a comprehensive multidisciplinary nocturnal bladder symptom score that captured clinically relevant domains and quantified the impact on issues of importance to older people hospitalised for comorbidities. Relevant health dimensions were identified from a review of literature and a bank of potential items mapped for validated items that aligned with standardised definitions of night-time lower urinary tract symptoms.
