Abstract

With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, pressure to digitize the education sector has reached a new level worldwide. Beyond being framed as the only way for education to properly respond to the pandemic, digital technologies are envisioned to facilitate more efficient and informed decision-making on educational provision in the welfare state, including personally tailored precision education. This chapter critically reflects on one core aspect of the digitalization of education across countries: datafication. We illustrate how a growing amount of (digital) data is produced and used in all three basic contexts of educational decision-making: policy development, accountability, and school practice..
