Abstract

When Robert Dixon invited me to speak at the conference that formed the basis of this book of essays I wondered whether to accept. Alex Miller is a dear friend whose writings I admire as I love and admire him, but I didn't know what I could contribute. As a philosopher, I'm not necessarily competent to offer critically appreciative comments of the kind a literary critic would; not at length, at any rate.
