Shifting relationships between subject and discipline

Abstract

This chapter outlines the history of the relations between English as a subject in Australian schools and the disciplinary study of English at universities. As a perspective on that history, we take two figures from late 19th and early 20th-century education (William Henry Williams and Walter Murdoch) and two figures from post-World War II education (A. D. Hope and Ian Reid). Each of these influential figures was involved in both subject English in more than one State of Australia and the establishment and development of English and literary studies at the tertiary level.
