The Creativity of the Kampung

Abstract

The terms kampung and the city of Solo (Surakarta) are used as entry points to observe how the geography of creative industries maps onto kampungs as real and imagined organising units in ways that contribute to sustainable development. We review how the global theoretical and policy discussion of creative industries has found its way into national and local policy in Indonesia and Solo. We find that the notion of “creative kampung” has been subject to contradictory policies but also has inherent contradictions that are revealed in the geographical intersections between creativity and sense of community.
