Abstract

We seek to bring Australian urban conditions and urban planning responses to the centre of urban studies. We do so by emphasising Australia's uncanniness – its urban conditions and urban planning practices and policies being strange but also familiar. We interpret this uncanniness in terms of “three Es”. Australia can be viewed as exceptional – a set of places to look for the extremes of urban and environmental conditions that are likely to be faced elsewhere in the future. Australia can be regarded as having an eclectic mix of conditions and influences on urban development and planning practices.
