Abstract
The language and practices of urban regeneration have changed over the last century. Relatives of the term appeared through the various forms of postwar regeneration in Europe, reconstruction, redevelopment, and renewal, though the concept of demolition and rebuilding is of course ancient. Urban regeneration that specifically became a key policy issue in the 1980s has dominated urban planning agendas since then with the new euphemisms urban renewal and urban renaissance, sometimes with further identifiers such as sustainable, transit, creative, smart, and mixed use.
