Abstract

System dynamics is a computational modelling method which is used to analyse the behaviour of complex systems over time. This chapter provides an overview of system dynamics followed by step-by-step guidance on how to apply the method. The main advantages and disadvantages of applying the method are described along with any related methods, training, and application times, reliability and validity evidence, and recommended reading. A case study analysis focussed on drink driving-related crashes is used to demonstrate the method and its outputs. Equations are built into system dynamics models to enable simulation of behaviour in terms of growth and decay and the testing of different policy in..
