A Singaporean Art? Performance and Installation Art, 1985-2024

Abstract

The subject of this thesis is Singapore performance-based art and the writing and the discourse around this art between 1985 and the present. The central question of this thesis is: Is there major performance and installation art being produced in Singapore, and how do they contribute to the discourse of global art and globalism? To answer this question, this thesis distinguishes between national and international discourses of art and art history. It uses a case-study approach for examining Singapore’s art historiography.
