Abstract
This chapter provides a broad overview of the literature studying culture and performance measurement. It presents a framework developed from a large sample of firms that can be useful in studying culture at different levels within the firm and links culture to the formal institutions that incorporate both the internal controls implemented by the firm and the controls imposed by those external to the firm. The chapter uses three case studies (i.e., published manuscripts) to demonstrate how the framework can be used to understand the relation between culture and control choices, with a particular emphasis on performance measurement and reward systems.
