Abstract
Food systems in Indonesia, as in most developing countries, have experienced major transformations in the course of agriculture modernisation. This has led to a loss of once healthy human diets and eco-systems, as well as a decline in social cohesion and long term food security. Our detailed ethnographic research over the past decade, mainly in Java and Bali but also in East Timor and India, informs this volume. It documents this decline but also the recent rise of bottom-up initiatives to revive small farming, sustainable production methods, and community-based distribution systems.
