Abstract
In this essay, I argue that the sense of Deleuze’s philosophical project is bound up in the distance he takes from Jean Hyppolite. In the first part, I discuss, in a general way, how Deleuze and Hyppolite think about the project of a logic of sense. In the second part, I argue that Hyppolite’s discussion of the speculative proposition in Hegel provides the model for Deleuze’s own reflections on the thought of becoming and that reading Deleuze in this light illuminates many of the most difficult passages in his work.
