Abstract

Bequia is a small eastern Caribbean island where people speak varieties of English and English-based creole. Small amounts of phonetic variation exist but most variation occurs at the level of grammar, especially in relation to predication and the marking of tense and aspect. Speakers in different villages on the island favour particular variants, contributing to the association of ways of speaking with place.
