Youth, Labour and Value in the Hospitality Industry

Abstract

This report examines the working conditions of young hospitality workers, and explores their role in creating value in the hospitality industry. The report is based on a five-year program of research conducted in Melbourne and Newcastle that collected and analysed the voices and experiences of hospitality workers. This research approached hospitality labour from a unique perspective, exploring the relationship between workers’ identities, value creation processes and labour practices in this industry, all in the context of challenging and precarious conditions for workers.
