Abstract

The prevalence and the burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD) are both rising steadily around the world [1]. Much of this rise can be attributed to a major expansion of hypertension and, especially, diabetes mellitus in aging populations. CKD s future trends are inexorably linked to trends in diabetes, which is currently estimated to be the attributable cause of 36% of the CKD burden [1]. Thus, it behooves all interested in the care and prevention of CKD to take note of what is happening in the world of diabetes.
