Abstract

The mining industry produces a large amount of mineral tailings with the potential to cause significant environmental and social impacts in the occurrence of tailings storage facility failures. Dewatering tailings before storage using thickening is the industry standard, but for tailings with fine particles, thickening operations alone cannot generally reduce the tailings water content to a geotechnically safe level. Thus, high pressure filtration is now being considered by many mining companies to both decrease water use in the industry and provide safer tailings storage.
