Archival Care at Arsip Jazz Indonesia

Abstract

Abstracts: Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork and analysis of musical media, this article focuses on the archival record of Chinese-Javanese jazz producer Harry Lim maintained in the collections of Arsip Jazz Indonesia (Indonesia Jazz Archive). I examine Lim’s history as a transnational migrant in the 1940s American music business and connect his history to social values shaped by the grassroots archivists. I use archival care, the idea that archiving should be practiced with more attention to the people and communities that produced and value materials, to interpret these practices as a form of reparative cultural work.
