“Grim Hallmarks” The far right, the media and the war in Gaza

Abstract

This chapter examines the nexus between international media coverage of the Gaza conflict and the rise of far-right parties (FRPs), encompassing both radical-right parties (RRPs) and extreme-right parties (ERPs). Drawing on existing research, the chapter identifies a pervasive pro-Israel bias in Western media's reporting on the Gaza war, often accompanied by Islamophobic framing and a dehumanisation of Palestinians. This bias is evidenced by disproportionate coverage of Israeli narratives, minimal attention to Palestinian suffering, and a lack of sympathetic portrayal of Palestinian victims compared to other conflict zones.
