Abstract

An optical star-shaped network with single ring architecture was proposed for implementing high-speed ring networks on a star-wired cabling layout. The network was based on optical foldback using wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) and wavelength routing. Bit-error rates below 10 -9 were achieved at a speed of 155 Mb/s. The experimental set up consisted of an N×N arrayed waveguide grating in the wire center, incoherent light sources as nodes and fibres in between.
