Beliefs about natural forest systems

Abstract

Forest management agencies are increasingly compelled to consider the beliefs and values of a range of stakeholders in decisions regarding forest resources. Beliefs about natural forest processes underpin a range of attitudes and responses to resource management. This paper explores concepts of natural forests. Group interviews were conducted with 38 people with diverse interests and experience in forest environments. Participants were members of forest-related interest groups: groups supporting and opposing commercial harvesting of native forests as well as bushwalking, hunt and four-wheel-drive clubs.
