Three simple access algorithms which allow network nodes to operate independently irrespective of their positions on the ring were proposed. As such, the value of trading off complexity in access algorithms against their ability to fairly allocate network resources in proportion to the traffic demand on each route was investigated. It was shown that through simulations that below commonly accepted network loading levels, the algorithms were able to deliver comparable throughput performance and fairness to synchronous round robin (SRR).
