Japanese culture specific face and politeness orientation: A pragmatic investigation of yoroshiku onegaishimasu

Abstract

This paper illuminates Japanese politeness orientation by investigating the use of the formulaic expression, yoroshiku onegaishimasu (literal meaning: 'I make a request and I hope things go well') in naturalistic data. Yoroshiku onegaishimasu is frequently used in various contexts, serving various pragmatic functions. The paper discusses the link between its literal meaning and its functions, and reveals a Japanese culture-specific 'face' which is more sensitive to debt than the threat to the freedom of action.
