Abstract

Talking about Yangzhou, the artists, scholars, businessmen, scenic water channel, bridges, gardens and the romantic or tragic history may come to our mind. This book is a biography of Yangzhou, telling readers how it rose again during the war between Ming and Qing dynasty, how it reached its peak in the 18th century and became a prominent commercial city and how it faded during the contingency or inevitability of history, leaving few cultural fragments that connect the past and the present.
