A simple route to tunable two-dimensional arrays of quantum dots

A simple, robust, and flexible procedure to generate 2D arrays of quantum dots was presented. It was found that polystyrene (PS) sphere were organized into 2D arrays (islands) by spreading a solution of the latex particles on the surface of water. The fluorescence image of the hexagonal arrays showed the presence of quantum dots organized on the metallic islands. Analysis suggests that despite the homogeneous close-packing of the QDs, there is little energy- or electron-transfer-induced luminescence quenching.
