Taking the physical layer seriously in ASTNs

Abstract
The extension of current ASON/ASTN standards to include "automatic path control" is proposed. This extension will allow the Control Plane to automatically "fine tune" an optical path to combat trickle errors. This added function can delay or avoid protection switching thereby further reducing system OPEX.
