Image-based modelling of architectural sites: The iWitness approach

Abstract

This paper discusses image-based modelling and the generation of textured 3D object models. The main focus of the presentation is upon a low-cost, easy-to-use photogrammetric system which can handle hidden object parts and model curves in object space. The concept includes the following stages: first, measurement of points, lines and curves; second, selection of a polygon which describes a potential object entity; and third, texturing the entity. The reconstruction of hidden object parts, through approximate measurement from constructed neighbourhood points in object space, is also considered.
