Abstract

The experiments used in the lectures while teaching a course on powder technology are discussed. Most courses on fluid-particle interactions begin by examining the settling of a single spherical particle. Hindered settling can be illustrated using a pair of perspex tubes filled with the water, the first containing only a single small bead and the second large group of identical beads. It is noted that most of the demonstrations can be built at little cost using materials readily available in most engineering departments.
