Abstract

This paper estimates the stresses due to gravity loading in various elements of a Roman theatre structure chosen for this case study. The Theatre at Beneventum (now called Benevento) was built in the early second century AD. It is one of the most representative examples of the achievement of Roman Empire theatres and is still considerably well preserved. A gravity load analysis, considering both permanent actions and temporary actions, has been performed on key elements of the structure including the walls, barrel vaults and cross vaults, using Finite Element techniques where appropriate. The results of these analyses have been compared with material strengths obtained by testing replicated ..
