This review surveys recent pre-clinical studies examining the role p38 of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) in a number of important cardiovascular diseases, such as atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, stroke and chronic heart failure. On the basis of this body of data, we propose that p38 MAPK may be an important therapeutic target in these putative indications and that further study is both justified and required to elucidate the therapeutic potential of p38 MAPK inhibitors in cardiovascular diseases. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd.
