Making ‘The domes of St Mark’

Abstract

In 1907 Arthur Streeton was aware of criticism that his work had become commercial, and lacked the conviction of his earlier Australian painting. But does the argument that commercial success led Streeton to produce works of poorer quality hold true? In 1908 Arthur Streeton visited Venice in April and again in October to prepare works for a large exhibition held in Australia in 1909. ‘The domes of St. Mark’s’ in the University of Melbourne’s Art Collection presents an excellent case study of a work produced specifically for a sale show at a time when Streeton was aware of criticism of his work.
