Understanding parental motivators and barriers to uptake of child poison safety strategies: A qualitative study

Abstract

Objectives: To develop an understanding of factors acting as barriers and motivators to parental uptake of child poison safety strategies. Design: A qualitative study involving semistructured interviews and focus groups. A grounded theory approach was used for the collection and analysis of data. Participants: Sixty five parents of children under 5 years of age, some of whom had experienced an unintentional child poisoning incident. Results: A range of knowledge based, environmental, and behavioral barriers to comprehensive parental uptake of poison safety practices were identified.
