Abstract

PURPOSE: To investigate a new pattern of tumor recurrence observed at imaging in patients with metastatic gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) after initial partial response to imatinib mesylate. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-two patients with metastatic GIST who underwent treatment in a clinical trial with oral imatinib mesylate were followed up for 29 months. An institutional review board-approved protocol was used. The study complied with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, and written informed consent was obtained from all patients.
