Serotonin in Stress

Abstract

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) is a widely distributed monoamine that has been involved in almost every function of the brain. Stress influences 5-HT activity, an interaction that could be involved in the development of stress-related illness. Conversely, serotonergic drugs modulate activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis and physiological responses to stress. © 2007 Copyright © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
