Abstract

Music often contains many different auditory streams and one of its great interests is the relationship between these streams (melody vs. counterpoint vs. harmony). As these different streams reach our ears at the same time, it is up to the auditory system to segregate them. Auditory stream segregation is based mainly on our ability to group different streams according to their overall auditory perceptual differences (such as pitch or timbre). People with impaired hearing have great difficulty separating auditory streams, including those in music. It has been suggested that attention can influence auditory streaming and, by extension, visual information. A psychoacoustics experiment was run ..
