Abstract

The impact of a spherical object on the surface of a flat steel plate is considered in this study. Two simplified calculation procedures which can be used to obtain estimates of the amount of indentation and reaction forces at the point of contact are presented. Results so obtained have been comparison with those from finite element analysis. The Hertz model which is based on the half-space assumption is shown to produce conservative estimates. The alternative spring-mass model which is based on linearization is shown to provide much better estimates. © 2011 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
