Abstract

Facts box Infrequent hallucinations -; auditory as well as visual -; are common in the general population and do not necessarily signify a psychiatric disorder. Hallucinations occur in a number of psychiatric disorders, and are most common in schizophrenia. Hallucinations in the setting of brain disease, that is, of organic etiology, are uncommon in general practice but are frequently encountered on hospital wards, especially among the elderly. Although hallucinations may occur in a number of modalities within the individual, the etiological, biological, and treatment facets differ somewhat for auditory, visual, olfactory, gustatory, and tactile hallucinations.
