Abstract
In this chapter we propose to analyze a peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing system by means of a so-called level-dependent Quasi Birth-and-Death (QBD) process. We consider the dissemination of a single file consisting of different segments and include a model for the upload queue management mechanism with peers competing for bandwidth. By applying an efficient matrix-analytic algorithm we evaluate the performance of P2P file diffusion in terms of the corresponding extinction probability, that is, the probability that the sharing process ends. © Springer Science+Business Media LLC 2009.
