Abstract

Aims/hypothesis. Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition has been recently suggested to have retinoprotective actions in diabetic patients but the mechanism of this effect is not known. In vitro, angiotensin II stimulates expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a permeability-inducing and endothelial cell specific angiogenic factor which has been implicated in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy in humans and in experimental animals.
