Targeted therapy for malignant gliomas

Abstract

The identification of markers that are associated with tumour but not normal tissue has allowed the development of highly-specific targeted therapies. Monoclonal antibodies, either alone or linked to radioisotopes or toxins, have provided a powerful tool for research, as well as the basis for promising therapeutic agents with less side effects than standard radiotherapy or chemotherapy. A new class of drugs, the tyrosine kinase inhibitors, which interfere with the function of key molecules in cancer-promoting pathways, have had a dramatic effect in haematological malignancy and are being trialled in solid tumours, including glioma.
