Published : 2012
Abstract
The article examines the emergence of high-rise homes as a distinctive feature of urbanity. Taking a chronological approach, with examples from a number of cities in various regions of the world, the article explores the meanings and narratives that have been attached to this form of housing, as well as the material and social circumstances under which such housing has been produced and inhabited. The question of whether or not high-rise dwellings are appropriate homes, and more importantly, for whom, is discussed with reference to different times and places. © 2012 Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved..
