The Myers oration 2005: Untimely death, law and suicidality

Abstract

The incidence of premature death amongst persons with psychiatric disorders is substantial and often not adequately appreciated. In particular, the percentage of persons with schizophrenia spectrum disorders and with bipolar disorders who commit suicide is very high, possibly up to 13%. The oration reviews recent international analyses of such data and notes limitations in official records. It then examines legal responses to the phenomenon and, by reference to data on Australia's National Coroners Information System, identifies recommendations made by coroners about such deaths between 2000 and 2005.
