Abstract

This tutorial provides an overview of some key parameters that influence energy consumption in cloud computing and optical networking. We present simple energy models of optical and wireless communications networks and cloud computing, and show how energy consumption depends on the underlying equipment, the network architecture, and the traffic carried by the network. We use these energy models to quantify energy efficiency of the network and identify trends in energy-efficient networking. Finally, we highlight some strategies for improving energy efficiency in future networks, including device design, optical bypass, and optimizing the location of data centres and caches in the network.
