Reducing NGN energy consumption with IP/SDH/WDM

Abstract
We analyze network node architectures for packet-based Next Generation Networks (NGNs), and show that the currently held vision of an IP/WDM network may not be the most desirable from an energy consumption point of view. We show that including a circuit-based transport layer (e.g., TDM layer), as an adjunct to the IP layer, has the potential to provide substantial energy savings for NGNs. © 2010 ACM.
