An elective transfusion policy: Sensitization rates, patient transplantability, and transplant outcome

Abstract

Sixty-three patients commencing dialysis for renal failure were entered into a study of the effects of an elective transfusion policy. Patients who had lymphocytotoxic antibodies reacting with 10% or more of a random panel (peripheral blood lymphocytes), or had received transplants previously, were excluded. Each patient received 1 unit of packed cells every 3 months until cadaveric transplantation was performed. Elective transfusion was also ceased.if sensitization to 10% or more of the panel cells developed, clinically indicated transfusion was required, or transplantation became contraindicated.
