Abstract
The interaction of the evanescent field with the surrounding medium dictates the operation of tapered single mode optical fiber sensors. This interaction was investigated by direct measurement of the evanescent field distribution surrounding the taper region using a scanning near field optical microscope. The optical fibers were fabricated using a flame elongation technique. The observations agree well with finite difference beam propagation predictions.
