Abstract

The human 5-HT 1A receptor is located on chromosome 5q11.2-q13. 5-HT 1A receptors are widely distributed throughout the CN S. In the raphe nuclei, they are somatodendritic and act as autoreceptors to inhibit cell firing; postsynaptic 5-HT 1A receptors are present in limbic structures, particularly the hippocampus. 5-HT 1A receptors mediate neuronal hyperpolarization, via G-protein coupled K + channels. In the gastrointestinal tract, 5-HT 1A receptors on the guinea pig myenteric plexus act as inhibitory modulators of fast excitatory postsynaptic potentials. 5-HT 1A receptors have been implicated in the neuroendocrine regulation of adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) secretion.
