The Resurrection History of Heinrich Schütz

Abstract

Conducted by Stephen Grant, this ensemble combined the Eclectus Consort with MCM student soloists and ensemble in the performance of Schutz's first major narrative work, the Auferstehungshistorie of 1623, along with selected works of the late 16th to early 17th centuries. The study of this work reveals Schutz combining more ancient and modern styles of vocal writing with the rare assigning of the evangelist continuo being given over to an at times improvising consort of viols. Preparation focused on Schutz's use of harmony and text rhythm in the concerted sections to aim for maximum affective power, while the evangelist sections revealed Schutz's blending of the more ancient chant-like deliv..
