It is generally acknowledged that dealing with rapidly evolving digital technology is one of the big issues confronting the tertiary sector in recent times. Teaching art history with new technologies and the impact of digital scholarship on research in art history have both been subjects of case studies and reports. However, the current state of digital image databases, their size, scope and specificities, and their relationship to art history, is an area left largely unexamined.
